Hamilton Studio School's Young Art Programs are designed to provide a strong foundation in visual arts learning at each developmental stage from elementary school age, through middle school to high school . Well-balanced learning addresses core areas in the visual: design and composition, observation and representation, materials and process, visual narrative, and formal elements and principles which are things like colour, shape, line, etc.
At Young Artists' Studio we do a combination of exploratory exercises and developed projects. An exercise could pertain to colour mixing, observational work, material techniques etc. Projects are an opportunity to bring explored skills and techniques together with sustained creative attention.
Yes. Specific projects change, but, just as in sport, music and dance, it is important to review and practice core skills over time; students need overlap in the learning from year to year.
Doing art because its fun and because you enjoying working with materials and creating with your hands is the best reason of all to do art classes!
That being said, visualization, planning, process, observation, etc--these are skills children develop in our programs and which are applicable to many different fields of study. Research also shows that engaging in art promotes positive neurological development, enhancing cognitive function, and encouraging focus, calm and emotional well-being.
Monday classes start on September 29. Tuesday classes start on September 30.
